Arsenal hammered 4:1 against treble winner Manchester City in Penalty shootout to lift the FA Community Shield yesterday.

Arsenal beat Manchester City and win Community Shield!

This was Arsenal’s first competitive trophy since winning the 2020 FA Community Shield.

Arsenal beat City 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation on Sunday to win the Football Association’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium, a match that serves as a traditional curtain-raiser to the season.

The match is typically played between the winners of last season’s Premier League and FA Cup. Because City won both as part of the title treble also containing the Champions League for the first time, Arsenal took part as the runner-up in the league which made them possible to play with City for the title.

Fabio Vieira struck the winning goal as the Gunners prevailed  winners through spot kicks after Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri had failed to convert into the net.

It’s second Community Shield and third trophy in total for Mikel Arteta since he joined Arsenal in 2019 and a community shield number 17 for Arsenal history.

City has now lost the Community Shield in three straight years, having been defeated by Leicester in 2021 and Liverpool in 2022.

Arsenal has strengthened by signing Havertz, Declan Rice, and Jurrien Timber and is expected to be one of City’s biggest title rivals again in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal finished second last season.

The match also provided an early sign of what to expect from match officials in the coming season, with players and coaches having agreed to a so-called “Participant Charter”, which means they will face stricter sanctions for bad behaviour in matches.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was shown a yellow card in the first half for waving an imaginary yellow card after Rodri made a tactical foul. On either side of that, two players — Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and City’s Julian Alvarez — were booked for kicking the ball away.

In the 77th minute, Cole Palmer put Manchester City into the lead after he received the ball on the right-hand side and then cut inside before curling a left-footed shot from just inside the penalty area into the left-hand corner of the net past Aaron Ramsdale.

Leandro Trossard equalised for Arsenal in the die minute of stoppage time, after he tried an effort from just inside the penalty area which took a heavy deflection off defender Manuel Akanji which wrong-footed goalkeeper Ortega and ended up in the back of the net to make it 1–1 late on and send the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Kevin De Bryune hit the bar and Ramsdale saved Rodri’s kick which led to Fábio Vieira scoring the winning penalty for Arsenal to win their fifth Community Shield in ten years.

After the game Pep had something to say;Pep Guardiola: “We lost three [Community Shields] in a row. Do you know why? Because we won the Premier Leagues…”
