Defending champions of the Ghana Premier League, Medeama Sporting Club has not been impressive after the first round of the Ghana Premier League 2023/24 season.
The Yellow and Mauves had a historic season in the 2022/23 season when they won their first-ever Ghana Premier League at a club. However, Medeama Sporting Club has been impressive in the CAF Champions League. They secured in place in the group stages of the CAF Champions League after eliminating Remo Stars Football Club of Nigeria and Guinean giants AC Horoya in the preliminary stage.
But on the local scene, the performance of Medeama Sporting Club has not been as expected from them as defending champions. Moreover, they were eliminated in round 32 of the MTN FA Cup but Access Bank Division One side Skky Football Club.
After seventeen matches played in the first round, Medeama Sporting Club recorded seven wins, drew four, and lost six games in the first round of the Ghana Premier League 2023/24 season. They accumulated twenty-five points out of fifty-one available. With zero goal difference, Medeama Sporting Club scored fifteen goals and conceded as many as they scored.
In the first round, Medeama Sporting Club emerged as the fifth-best away side in the Ghana Premier League. They won two, drew two, and lost five away games in the first round. They picked up eight out of twenty-seven in their nine away games.
In the CAF Champions League, Medeama Sporting Club is third in Group D with four points after four matches. They are just a point away from the qualification zone occupied by Al Ahly Sporting Club(1st) and Young Africans Sporting Club(2nd). However, Al Ahly has a game in hand against Algerian side CR Beloiuzdad.
Ahead of the second round, Medeama Sporting Club made five notable signings to strengthen their squad for the title defense mission and quest to seek qualification to reach the quarter-finals of the Total Energies CAF Champions League.
Versatile Midfielder Michael Kwasi Enu joined the Yellow and Mauves on a free transfer after a contract expiry with Bibiani Gold Stars Sporting Club. Michael Enu signed for three years for Medeama Sporting Club. Former left-back Fatawu Sulemana and center-back Kwaku Osei also joined Medeama Sporting Club on a three-year deal each.
Ghana Premier League 2020/21 goal king Diawisie Taylor also joined Medeama Sporting Club ahead of the second round as well as Burkinabe forward Sidibe Ben Doauda who previously played for RC Kadiogo and was part of their team that eliminated Asante Kotoko Sporting Club for the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League on penalty shootouts at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Also, Medeama Sporting Club parted ways with Richard Akrofi after nine months of joining the club from Nsoatreman Football Club and midfielder Agyei Boakye.
After the Africa Cup of Nations, Medeama Sporting Club will face the defending champions of the CAF Champions League Al Ahly of Egypt at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi in February while in the Ghana Premier League, they will face a stubborn Accra Lions side.
