After eliminating Remo Stars of Nigeria and AC Horoya of Guinea to reach the group stages of their maiden campaign in the CAF Champions League, Medeama Sporting Club were handed a defeat in their group stage opener against record winners Al Ahly at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.
Medeama Sporting Club were compact and solid in the first department of the game. They we resolute in defense and some crucial saves from goalkeeper Felix Kyei denied Al Ahly from scoring in the first half.
Back from recess, Medeama Sporting Club continued to hold the Egyptian giants until the introduction of South African playmaker Percy Tau and Afsha into the game by Marcel Koller in the 61st minute. Afsha and Percy Tau brought in much energy in the attack of the Red Devils.
In the 62nd minute, Felix Kyei made a crucial save to deny left-back EL Debes from getting the opener for Al Ahly. Al Ahly finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through Kahraba with a header that went beyond the reach of Felix Kyei.
Medeama SC went close to getting their equalizer through right-back Kamaradini Mamudu in the 72nd minute but goalkeeper El Shenawy was there at the right time to deny the Ghanaian champions.
With just fifteen minutes to end the game, Hussien EL Shahat doubled the lead for Al Ahly. 80th-minute substitute Salah Mohsen worsened matters for Medeama SC after getting on the end of Afsha’s delightful cross to make it 3-0.
Al Ahly climbs to the top of Group D with three points while Medeama SC occupies the 3rd position after a game played each.
