MATCH REPORT: Asante Kotoko pip Real Tamale United in Kumasi – Ghana Premier League.


The twenty-six-time Ghanaian Champions Asante Kotoko extended their unbeaten run in the Ghana Premier League to five and six in all competitions in a row after securing and 1-0 win over Real Tamale United Football Club.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has now won five games and drew one in their last six games in all competitions after a slow start to the 2023/24 season. Due to the departure and arrival of players before the start of the season, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club lacked consistency in their team which led to uninspiring performances and shambolic results.

Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum didn’t make any changes to the side that had been playing for the past five matches and continued with the three-back system.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, the home side started the game calmly with some exciting football. They passed well and had total control over the game. The intensity and the tactics of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club forced Real Tamale United to sit back and protect their post from conceding.

In the ninth minute, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club’s Ugandan forward Steven Dese Mukwala scored from a nice interposition play but Isaac Oppong was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.

Real Tamale United Football Club however had their first shot on target through midfielder Baba Kushibo from a free kick which Frederick Asare stepped up and grabbed it firmly for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club in the twenty-sixth minute.

Back for the second half, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club continued serving their supporters and everyone at the stadium with some delightful football and a good exchange of passes but were yet to break the deadlock of the game. Head Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum made an early change by bringing on former West Africa Football Academy captain Michael Kyei Dwamena to replace Enoch Morrison who was operating from the wings.

Nimble-footed Baba Yahaya switched from the middle to the wings where Enoch Morrison was operating and Michael Kyei Dwamena moved to the middle.

In the seventy-seventh minute, there was a heavy challenge on Baba Yahaya inside the penalty box and the referee blew his whistle for a penalty to the Porcupine Warriors. Steven Dese Mukwala stepped up and sent goalkeeper Rauf Mahamud the wrong give Asante Kotoko Sporting Club the lead. The goal was the Uganda forward sixth goal in the Ghana Premier League 2023/24 season and his seventh league goal for Asante Kotoko. Moreover, is his eighth goal this season in all competitions.


Despite scoring, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club continued dominating play but couldn’t add to their lead after 90+8 minutes. Real Tamale United Football Club are now winless in their last five games in the Ghana Premier League and have lost all their last four games.

 Asante Kotoko Sporting Club are now sixth on the league table with twenty-six points and three points behind the first-place team FC Samartex 1996 while Real Tamale United are seventh with fourteen points and has a game in hand.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club will travel to Sunyani and play against “Struggling” Bofoakwa Tano Football Club at the Coronation Park in week 17 of the Ghana Premier League.

Elsewhere in Dawu, Dreams FC shared spoils with Accra Lions while Nsoatreman FC pipped Aduana FC at the Nana Koronmasah Park in Nsoatre. Bechem United also lashed Premier League debutants Nations FC by 3-0 and FC Samartex also humbled Karela United by 3-0 in Samreboi
