The “Wonder Club” Accra Great Olympics held “in form” Asante Kotoko Sporting Club to a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the newly adopted home of Accra Great Olympics in week fifteen of the Betpawa Premier League 2023/24 season.
Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, the away side came into the game with five wins in five matches in a row all competitions including their 2-3 away win over their bitterest rivals Accra Hearts of Oak while for Accra Great Olympics Football Club, they have lost their last two games in the Betpawa Premier League against Legon Cities at home and Berekum Chelsea away. They lost 2-0 and 1-0 in those games respectively. In addition, Great Olympics came into the game without a win. They have lost three and drew two.
For Asante Kotoko, Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum maintained the team that won against Hearts of Oak Sporting Club last weekend while Annor Walker made five changes in the side that lost to Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City.
Accra Great Olympics registered the first shot just four minutes inside the game from their playmaker Emmanuel Antwi but his strike was just above the crossbar. Asante Kotoko captain Richmond Lamptey, who has been highly tipped for the upcoming African Cup Of Nations which will be held in Ivory Coast next month set Ugandan Forward, Steven Dese Mukwala with a delightful through pass but failed to find the back of the net in the twenty-sixth minute.
With five minutes to end the first half, Accra Great Olympics goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made a save to deny Isaac Oppong from putting the Porcupine Warrior in front.
Back from recess, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club went all out in search of the opener. Emmanuel Sekyere made a block to deny Peter Amidu Acquah from scoring in the sixty-fourth minute after a lovely one-two play between him and Baba Yahaya.
With two minutes to end the game, Richmond Lamptey had a glorious chance to give Asante Kotoko the lead but his strike was just behind the post. The game ended goalless despite numerous chances created by both sides.
Asante Kotoko moves to the seventh position of the league table with twenty-three points after fifteen games played following the draw while Accra Great Olympics moves to tenth with seventeen points but has a game in hand against defending champions, Medeama Sporting Club.
Accra Great Olympics will lock horns with their city rivals Accra Hearts of Oak in the Accra derby at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday, December 22, 2023, and Asante Kotoko will host Real Tamale United at the same venue on Sunday, December 24, 2023, in week 16 of the Betpawa Premier League.
In other matches, Coach Frimpong Manso won his debut game for Bibiani Goldstars as they triumphed over FC Samartec 1996 by 3-0 at Duns Park in Bibiani.
Elsewhere at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Patrick Ansu’s lone goal ensured Berekum Chelsea picked maximum points against Karela United while Legon Cities defeated Bofoakwa Tano by a goal to nil at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, the adopted home of the Sunyani based club.
