“I would love to play with him” – Abdul Fatawu Safiu on Steven Dese Mukwala.

Former Asante Kotoko Sporting Club attacker Abdul Fatawu Safiu has rejoined the club on a two-and-a-half-year deal ahead of the second round of the Ghana Premier League 2023/24 season.

Abdul Fatawu Safiu joined the Porcupine Warriors on a free transfer after a wonderful four years in Sweden with Trelleborg FF and FC Trohelletan. During his first tenure, Abdul Fatawu Safiu scored thirteen goals in nineteen outings for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club in both the Normalization Special Committee’s tournament and the Total Energies CAF Confederations Cup in 2019 before moving to Sweden.

In his first tenure, there was a good relationship between him and Burkinabe forward Sogne Yacouba upfront for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club. The duo were a nightmare for defenders in the CAF Confederations Cup and their impressive performance led Asante Kotoko Sporting Club to reach the group stages of the competition after ten years of absence. They were supported by “speedster” Emmanuel Gyamfi who is currently with Aduana Football Club and “skillful” Maxwell Baakoh who is playing in the Algerian league with USM Khenchela.

In this first interview with the club’s media after rejoining, Abdul Fatawu Safiu talked how the good relationship he had with Sogne Yacouba both on and off the field.

In the interview, He said it is easy to play with Sogne Yacoube and his determination was on a higher level. In addition, Abdul Fatawu Safiu described his relationship with the Ihefu Football Club of Tanzania as brothers.

“Outside, people were thinking me and Yacouba were not cool but we were more than cool, we were like brothers. Sometimes you see us fighting on the field but after the game, we go out together, and sometimes we even eat together. As of now, I call him, and he calls me. He is a very good guy and a good striker; he always wants to give and play his heart out and works hard as well. That is what I like about him.” Abdul Fatawu Safiu said.

“So, playing with him as a partner was just easy for me to give the passes and the free kicks. So, it was easy for me” he added.

The 29-year-old experienced striker went further to talk about the currently top scorer for the club Steven Dese Mukwala. The warrior for Kampala, Uganda scored eight goals in the first round for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club. Two home goals and six away goals. In his first season, Steven Dese Mukwala scored fourteen goals in the Ghana Premier League for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club.

Abdul Fatawu Safiu expressed his readiness to play with the NASCO Player of December in the Ghana Premier League. He heaped praise on Mukwala for his goal-scoring form at Kotoko because for him (Abdul Fatawu Safiu), it is not easy for a player to come to Asante Kotoko Sporting Club and be scoring right from the onset.

He discussed the Ugandan forward as a smart and a very good striker.

“Mukwala is doing so well, He is a very good striker. It is not easy to come to Asante Kotoko and just score goals. He is doing good and I would love to play with him, He is so smart. He knows when to shoot, when to pass and that stuff so I like him very much” Abdul Fatawu Safiu on Steven Dese Mukwala.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club resumed training ahead of the second round of the Ghana Premier League on Monday, January 21, 2024, at the Adako Jachie Training Ground. Their first game in the second round will be at the Hohoe Sports Stadium against Kpando Hearts of Lions Football Club Limited and Abdul Fatawu Safiu is likely to be named in the matchday squad.,
